Book A Study of Christian Community Building

by Brenda Gottsche

About the Author:

Born in Canada in 1946, I joined the ranks of that hip, happening, me-generation called the "baby -boomers". My parents were certainly surprised by my arrival, since they believed their baby-making days were over. I immediately proceeded to make sure the household of older siblings and parents revolved around me. The early experience fed my life-long urge to be the centre of attention. What better way to indulge this need than to become a teacher. I graduated with a B.E.D. in 1968 and taught high school biology in Montreal for 3 years. In the meantime I met a handsome Australian in a Montreal pub and ended up marrying him in Singapore in 1972. In 1974 we came to Sydney and by 1976, we had 3 children, Ryan, Kylie and Michael. In 1979 we discovered the dynamic community at St Anthony's and promptly joined a Family Group (as well as 100 other parish committees.)

I returned to teaching high school at Mater Maria College in Sydney in the early 80's. I then did further study in communication and proceeded to lecture at the University of Technology as well as run my own communication consultancy. In 1990, I decided to combine my interest in Family Groups with further study, hence this book.

Graham (the handsome Australian) and I moved to London in early 1996 and are soaking up the good life here as "empty-nesters". So far this is my favourite place in the whole world. We even helped Peter McGrath reverse the colonisation progress by setting up Family Groups in the parish of St Joseph's Highgate in North London. Here, as in many parishes, people are impressed by the simplicity and naturalness of Family Groups. - that "it's so simple, why didn't we think of it before" reaction. Hopefully this book will illustrate this simplicity while reminding readers of the challenges of building loving communities.

Foreword by Peter McGrath

It has been said that a vision without a task is a dream: a task without a vision is a drudgery. Whereas a vision and a task is the hope of the world. Certainly Brenda Gottsche has shared in the task of the Passionist Family Group Movement from the early years. Here she examines the vision and its educational implications for the participating adult.

As the movement hopes to make its contribution to the common striving for unity and harmony amongst us, Brenda provides us with an opportunity to look at what is occurring beneath the obvious activities of the Family Groups. Furthermore, she offers a stable platform from which further study can be launched.

This study is a very valuable contribution to our Movement. It will be a source of encouragement to thousands of adults, who have given of their time and energy to build a loving, accepting community.  Hopefully, it will also serve as an invitation for many perceptive adults to participate.
